There were some absolutely beautiful and elegant pieces in the Spring 2009 collections of designers like New Jersey native Dennis Basso as well as Derek Lam, Iodice, Monique Lhuillier , Marc Jacobs (well some of his stuff was pretty weird), Vivienne Tan and Matthew Williamson. Then let's just say Betsey Johnson and Joanna Mastroianni shook things up a bit
There was a pirate thing going on, "Little House on the Prarie" dresses, bowler hats, corsets, models in purple, green and pink wigs, menswear inspiration...and a parade of bridal dresses with all the brides in handcuffs! Sorry Betsey, I just didn't get it.
What was it with the brides yesterday?
There was another bride-themed surprise on Joanna Mastroianni's runway. Her collection was full of brilliant colors including red, fuschia, pink, canary, coral, chartreuse and tangerine (Matthew Williamson's collection also popped with similar vivid hues). When the show was winding down out comes one model in a white gown. She walks to the end of the runway where the pack of photographers is perched, she poses as expected, then instead of returning backstage she remains on the runway. Another model in a white gown comes out and poses for the press cameras. The first model joins the other in front of the cameras, they face each other and take each others hands - simulating a same sex marriage
